guy who’s stuck in a timeloop for so long he stops wanting to leave it. guy who started out trying to escape but slowly grew used to and became comforted by the familiarity of the repeating day. guy who is no longer who he was before the timeloop. guy who is offered a way out and violently refuses it because he can’t leave, doesn’t want to leave. guy who escapes the timeloop by chance or force or accident and doesn’t know how to live anymore. guy who keeps going through motions that don’t match the situation and keeps having conversations that aren’t actually occurring. guy who panics every time he realizes he can’t predict the next instant. guy who left the timeloop but still lives with it.

I’m wondering if, as a society who cares about vulnerable people, we could stop saying “traumatize” when we truly mean “upset”?
I am sick of hearing sad books or movies “traumatize” their readers. I simply do not believe that happens. A traumatic experience might be adjacent to books (I have vivid memories of books I was reading around certain experiences and even how the contents of those books affected my processing of the experiences). But it’s not caused by the book. And, y'know. The weather is Christofascist Censorship Attempts outside.
Meanwhile from the other side I continue to be surprised at just how badly people fail to understand trauma and traumatic experiences in general. Watering down the term isn’t helping. Find other hyperbole to express that The Bridge to Terebithia gutted you, chewed on your heartstrings, and made you cry your first pair of contact lenses right out of your preteen eyes.
#meanwhile actual trauma is not always experienced as consciously upsetting! #people may act extremely chill while being traumatized! #only to then be judged by a peanut gallery on how they handled things
I added those tags as an afterthought but upon reflection I want them in the main body of the post too.
This post is taking off and I’m wondering if it may have been because of my tone, which was harsher than I truly like to be. Still,
- We have got to be cautious of talking about books as if they’re dangerous
- We’ve got to be wary of the idea that talking about upsetting topics in general is dangerous (usually silence is far more harmful!)
- We could stand to be a bit more accurate in how we discuss traumatic events and their effects

A spoon’s only objective in life is to make soup go upwards, and it knows this. That’s why when you put one under a running tap it blasts the water way high. The spoon thinks there’s suddenly TONS of soup to deal with and it freaks out.
OP I want you to know I think of this post every single time I have to wash a spoon.

if i took a women’s scholarship and then transitioned during college would that count as swindling
WOULD THEY TAKE THE MONEY BACK
plan of action:
> take womens scholarship
> go to law school
> transition during law school
> get sued about it
> take it to the supreme court
> defend myself
> trans rights?
stop being funnier than me

“When the last tree has fallen, and the rivers are poisoned, you cannot eat money.”
Graffiti found in amphitheater in Menomonie, Wisconsin
Originally:
“When the last tree is cut, the last fish is caught, and the last river is polluted; when to breathe the air is sickening, you will realize, too late, that wealth is not in bank accounts and that you can’t eat money.”

Sophia, the Boston woman from 1875 who haunts a lamp I got at Brimfield: what is a stay at home girlfriend, if you please?
me: well, it’s a woman who’s financially supported by the man she’s dating, and she lives with him and usually keeps house and cooks for him
her: and they’re not married?
me: well, no; hence “girlfriend” rather than “wife.” I know that may alarm y-
her: oh calm down I know about Kept Women. he has no legal tie to her, though? she has no sort of standing with him in the eyes of the law? only his word that he’ll follow through?
me: yes
her: and remind me again- you don’t have to be financially dependent on a man anymore, right? there are more than like three careers open to women that will let you support yourself at a decent level now? and society isn’t pressuring you 24/7 to get married and stop working outside the home?
me: yes
her: so these women. CHOOSE to be dependent on a man. who could leave them at any moment without legal consequence. because they don’t like their jobs. the jobs, while imperfect, that let them live on their own, answerable to no-one
me: yes
her: that had better be some absolutely amazing jewelry they can pawn off if he leaves them, then
me: it’s usually not
her: THERE’S NOT EVEN SECURITY JEWELRY?!
me: oh by the way they blame feminism for “having to work”
her:
her: I became fully dependent on my in-laws who hated me, after my husband died two years into our marriage, because I was a 23-year-old orphan with no marketable skills in any avenue besides Running A Household and the only men left unmarried in my social circle were widowers thirty years my senior. I also couldn’t establish lines of credit as a widow because the merchants said my husband dying so soon meant that I didn’t have stable enough income. and that was entirely legal
me: yeah
her: I’m going to go slam some doors please do not bother me

Not the point of this post but I’m endlessly amused that Tumblr has rediscovered ghosts as a cultural metaphor for confronting the horrors of the present through the lens of the past in meme format. The essays I could write-

Little bit funny how people’s dislike of Harry Potter has now lapsed into like complete and total dismissal. The other day I was at a flower show and the theme for the displays at this particular flower show were book themed. And of course an admiring crowd went round and did the circuit of displays, ooh-ing and aah-ing at various renditions of The Railway Children and Little Red Riding Hood and taking photos. All extremely cool. And then they got to the Harry Potter section and there was just a complete blank look on a lot of people’s faces. They didn’t even comment like with the other displays, they simply walked by giving each other what-the-fuck-is-this shrugs. My sister is getting offered the opportunity to go to Harry Potter World by her college for art purposes this year and she said people were so distinctly unpsyched by even the offer of a very cheap coach trip and abysmally low priced tickets that they were already counting themselves out of the trip months in advance. There are stores with discount Gryffindor lunchboxes and scarves piling up desperately by the masses. Little stickers on them denoting price drops. Some stickers on top of others. Nobody gives a fuck about Harry Potter. It’s all terribly exciting. I hope the HBO show is the nail in the coffin and we can finally put this shambolic corpse to a stake through the chest rest
